What is a Personalised Support Specialist?

If you’ve come across the term “Personalised Support Specialist” and aren’t quite sure what it means, you’re not alone. It’s a relatively new way of describing a role that has existed in various forms for many years — but one that is becoming increasingly important as more people choose to take control of their own care and support.
So what exactly does a Personalised Support Specialist do?
A Personalised Support Specialist works alongside vulnerable adults to help them live independently, safely and with confidence. Unlike a traditional care worker who might follow a set routine of tasks, a Personalised Support Specialist takes a much more flexible and person-centred approach. The support is built entirely around the individual — their needs, their goals, their preferences and their pace.
This might include practical support such as help with housing and tenancy issues, benefits applications, budgeting and finances, admin and paperwork, shopping, meal planning or transport to appointments. But it also extends to emotional support, advocacy, social activities and simply being a friendly and trusted presence in someone’s life.
How is it different from a care worker?
A care worker typically focuses on personal care — washing, dressing, medication and so on. A Personalised Support Specialist focuses more on the practical and social aspects of daily life — the things that help a person maintain their independence and achieve their own goals.
The key word is personalised. No two people are the same, and no two support plans look the same. What works brilliantly for one person might not suit another at all. A good Personalised Support Specialist listens carefully, builds trust over time and adapts their approach to whatever the person needs on any given day.
Who might benefit from a Personalised Support Specialist?
Personalised support can benefit a wide range of people, including:
— Adults with learning disabilities who want to develop their independence and life skills
— People with neurodivergent conditions such as autism or ADHD who need support navigating daily life
— Adults experiencing mental health difficulties who benefit from consistent, non-judgmental support
— People living with young-onset dementia or age-related conditions who want to maintain their quality of life
— Anyone who has been assessed by social care and receives a Direct Payment and needs support using it effectively
What does personalised support actually look like in practice?

It might look like sitting together to sort through a pile of unopened letters and work out what needs to be done. It might be accompanying someone to a medical appointment and making sure their voice is heard. It could be going shopping together and gradually building the confidence to do it alone. Or it might simply be a cup of tea and a chat on a day when everything feels too much.
The philosophy is straightforward: it’s not about doing things for people. It’s about doing things with them — until they feel confident and capable enough to do it themselves.
Why choose a Personalised Support Specialist?
Choosing the right support is one of the most important decisions a person or their family can make. A Personalised Support Specialist offers something that a larger organisation often can’t — consistency, flexibility and a genuine human connection. You get the same person, every time, who knows you and understands what you need.
For many people, that continuity makes all the difference.
